Golda Meir (previously known as Golda Mabovitch) was an Israeli teacher, politician, and stateswoman. She was the fourth Prime Minister of Israel, serving from 1969 to 1974. Born on May 3, 1898, in present-day Ukraine, she immigrated to Israel in 1921 and worked as a teacher before becoming involved in the Zionist movement. Meir was one of the signatories of the Israeli Declaration of Independence, and during her time in office, she famously led Israel through the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Meir was a strong advocate for the establishment and recognition of Israel as a Jewish state and fought for Israel's security and survival. She passed away in December 1978 at the age of 80.
